While convenient, space heaters have reputation as fire hazards. In most cases, though, the fires resulted from failure to follow instructions or safety practices. Here are some space heater safety tips for you to remember this winter:
1. Read the heater’s instructions.
Your space heater should come with a manual that will include detailed safety instructions.
2. Put your space heater on the floor.
Don’t put your space heater on counters or other elevated surfaces to avoid it being knocked over. There are, however, some models that are designed for tabletop use. Just be sure first whether your space heater is designed for that.
3. Avoid using extension cords with space heaters.
The cables that come with space heaters usually are long enough to reach an outlet. If they aren’t, be sure you’re using a high-quality, heavy duty extension cord. Space heaters pull a large amount of energy that a typical extension cord can’t handle.
4. Keep space heaters three feet from any combustible material.
That includes bedding and draperies.
Have a fire safety plan ready and check your smoke detectors.
