It may be February but we’re not out of the woods yet when it comes to cold, dry air. There are a lot of ways to try and combat these discomforts and that’s usually through the use of appliances like space heaters, electric blankets, and humidifiers.
Here are some safety tips for you to consider when using these appliances.
Space Heaters
Remember to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using a space heater and don’t plug it into weak extension cords. Space heaters draw lots of power so it’s important that you use them wisely. Also remember to keep them approximately three feet from anything to avoid fires.
Electric Blankets
First and foremost, read the manufacturer’s instructions on both use and care. This is extremely important especially when you plan to wash the blanket. Remember to turn your blanket off when not in use and only use one heating blanket at a time. When storing your electric blanket, don’t fold too tightly or crunch it up or it could fray the internal wiring, which could pose a fire hazard. Do not use an electric blanket that is damp or wet!
Humidifiers
Of course, read the instruction manual that comes with your humidifier. Don’t leave it running all the time and keep it a safe distance from any other electrical components like appliances or wiring. Clean your humidifier regularly and avoid using it if the ambient humidity is above 50 percent. If your humidifier is going to go through a period of disuse, be sure to clean it and let it all dry out to avoid the growth of mold or other microorganisms.
If you have trouble with your home’s wiring and using appliances like these, you might have a big problem at hand to deal with like faulty or outdated wiring.
