In this area, summer is a time for thunderstorms. The heat updrafting into the clouds can cause frequent storming and even tornadoes. When a severe thunderstorm rolls through the area, it’s important to keep these things in mind:
1. Secure or bring in outdoor objects
Severe thunderstorms can come with high winds. The last thing you want is a chair through your sliding glass door after a storm. Put all your outdoor items in a safe place or secure them.
2. Avoid electrical equipment or telephones
Lightning can easily travel down your home’s wiring. Televisions are especially dangerous. Try not to use them and make sure you’re using surge protectors.
3. Avoid using running water
Electrical current can easily travel through the metal piping in your house and water is a conductor. Usually severe thunderstorms only last about half an hour so it shouldn’t be too inconvenient to postpone a shower.
